India's Transformative Journey in Space Exploration
India's space journey began with a clear purpose: to use technology for the betterment of its people. Starting in the 1960s with a small team, the nation's first rocket launch was a humble affair from a converted church, with parts transported on bicycles. This commitment to self-reliance and innovation led to the formation of ISRO in 1969. By 1975, India launched its first satellite, Aryabhata, which was a significant step toward becoming a global participant in space. This early emphasis on solving real-world problems back home, from connecting remote villages to monitoring weather, set a unique and pragmatic tone for its entire space program.
This pragmatic approach culminated in some of the most remarkable and cost-effective achievements in global space history. After achieving self-reliance in launching its own satellites with the successful SLV program in 1980, India developed the PSLV, a reliable workhorse rocket that set a world record by launching 104 satellites in a single mission. The country then set its sights on deep space, making global headlines with its first lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, which discovered water on the Moon. This was followed by the incredibly successful Mangalyaan mission, which placed a spacecraft into Mars's orbit on its very first attempt, all on a budget significantly smaller than comparable international missions.
